Shingles symptoms recurrence

Once a person is rid of any sort of disease, be it life - threatening or just plain annoying, the first and, probably, only thing they want to know is whether they will have to deal with it again. That is, they need to know if said illness has a high or a low recurrence rate. When talking about shingles, the interest is even more pronounced, since it is a skin condition, which not only makes it painful, but also socially crippling up until a certain point. Of course, the specialized literature claims that any shingles recurrence symptoms should be absent for the rest of the patients' natural life. But, as with many other things, human nature proves the medical doctors wrong most of the time.

The truth is that the shingles recurrence symptoms appear in more than ten percent of those that have already suffered through a bout of this terribly annoying skin condition. Fortunately, this means that the patient has only one chance in ten that he or she will get to visit a dermatologist anytime soon. Unluckily, the second time that these shingles recurrence symptoms manifest, they are even harder to spot than the first time around. Also, the second bout of shingles is much more serious than the first one.

These shingles recurrence symptoms are smarter than the original symptoms. Mostly, their intensity is lessened, making the pain, the itching and the rash just a ghost of what they have initially been. This misleads the patient into believing that he or she does not present with another case of shingles, but a simple allergy to something he or she wears or has eaten recently. As everyone can tell after the rash has fully developed once more, the fact that the shingles recurrence symptoms are less intense does not mean that the illness will be of less importance. Actually, the second time around, the disease will last longer, hurt more and, generally, be even more annoying than the first time.

Why would that be, one might wonder? Usually and naturally, once the body has suffered through a bout of any sort of illness, the immune system knows what to be on the lookout for next time. In the case of reoccurring shingles, this stands just as true as ever. So, what makes shingles so special? Well, for one, the virus that causes it - the varicella - zoster virus - cannot be killed. Both in the case of chicken pox and in the case of the initial shingles, the virus simply becomes inactive. Just like any other virus out there, the varicella - zoster virus waits for its opportunity to strike again. As a rule, when a patient has low immunity, it might attack the body without mercy. This type of high - recurrence rate risk patients are the ones that suffer from much more serious afflictions and for whom the shingles is the last of their worries: patient with AIDS, tuberculosis, cancer and autoimmune diseases.

Shingles recurrence symptoms: ways to spot them

Just because you have had shingles once, it does not mean that you will suffer through a second bout. But, if you wish to be on the safe side, here are some tips and tricks about how to spot the shingles recurrence symptoms early enough to try and stop the evolution of the disease:

  • If you notice some tingles in the same part of the body that you had shingles on, you might want to narrow it down to a specific area and follow it evolution.
  • Once the tingling is gone, the slight and barely there itching sensation should be right around the corner. It is triggered only by touch and the clothes you wear should not have any effect on the affected patch of skin.
  • If the itch has made its appearance, you can be sure that the reddening of your skin is coming. Once that has installed, you should schedule a visit to your dermatologist: you have shingles.
